A. A Room of One’s Own vibes. The value of having your own space to be productive in cannot be overstated. Maintaining a space that inspires you and keeps you focused is essential to yada yada yada . . . Let’s be honest here, Deborah. We all work better in a space we like, which makes one wonder how cubicles ever helped anyone. I had a cubicle only once. It was gray, plain, and claustrophobic. I was elated to be fired for doing puff-paint artwork on the clock (see the chapter “Getting Fired”). I recommend natural light, a brisk temperature, and some ambient yet not distracting music. Even now as I write this chapter, I am listening to the Valley of the Dolls music from the motion picture LP. Its hypnotic tracks are fast-acting, like a work-appropriate quaalude. I’m here working, yet I feel transported and safe.

B. Minimize distractions. This is where not having children, pets, or roommates is key. Unwanted distractions cannot be a part of your work terrarium. Distractions are dripping boners from the devil full of lust and expended seed. Don’t get seduced by the desire to do things that aren’t what you are supposed to be doing. I am currently typing at a computer in my office that has the Wi-Fi disabled because I can’t be trusted to not open a new tab and shop Gucci or peruse some FTM porn. My desire to buy a tracksuit and financially support the trans OnlyFans community is strong, but my drive to finish this clunker of a book must remain stronger.
